CERTIFIED HAND THERAPY

The primary objective of NYSSPT’s certified hand therapy is to provide a comprehensive and specialist-powered program to maintain or improve functional independence and/or prevent deformities of the hand and upper extremity through appropriate therapeutic intervention, splinting, and patient education. Hand Therapy services are oversought by a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) who’ve completed advanced training in occupational therapy.

The hand is a delicate and complex network of bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments, and is vital to activities of work and countless other everyday tasks. This makes the upper extremity (UE- hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder) vulnerable to several injuries/conditions:
➢ Carpal tunnel syndrome- repetitive movement
➢ Arthritis- joint inflammation
➢ Fractures and sprains from sports and athletics
➢ Neurological conditions- e.g., stroke
➢ Trigger finger- a condition in which a finger becomes stuck in a bent position
➢ Tendonitis- tendon inflammation, irritation and swelling
➢ Wounds and burns
All patients receive one-on-one treatment from a certified hand therapist who will create your plan of treatment, using the highest clinical standards in the field. NYSSPT’s CHT is trained in the latest techniques in hand and arm rehabilitation to ensure that our patients recover quickly and safely.

What to Expect

Here at NYSSPT, Our Certified Hand Therapist is specifically trained in providing patient education on upper extremity-related conditions and injuries, wound care, splinting, managing rehabilitation and developing post-surgical rehabilitation plans. CHT’s provide timely therapeutic services for injuries to the hand and arms in order to regain optimal function.

While the main goal of hand therapy is range of motion and functional strengthening, our CHT is also uniquely trained in the following specialized diagnostic, treatment, and rehab options:

  • Orthotic (splint) design, selection, fitting, fabrication and training (dynamic/static)

  • Manual therapy, soft tissue mobilization, positional release technique, trigger point therapy

  • Edema/lymphedema control and wound/scar management

  • Patient education in impairment or injury prevention

  • Sensory re-education

  • Serial casting and taping techniques

  • Pain management and treatment

  • Adaptive equipment assessment

  • Activities of daily living education, design and/or selection of adaptive/assistive devices

  • Physical agent modalities (ultrasound and electrical stimulation)

Your doctor and our Certified Hand Therapist will work with you to develop an individualized plan of care, including home exercise programs and therapy, so that you can resume your normal activities.
